The Purpose and Meaning of Life
The purpose of life is never clear cut is it. Rather, it is a subjective issue that could be classified by some, as part of the human condition and therefore imbedded in our search for meaning. Kelly Slater 38 years old and still ripping, 9x ASP World Champion says “that the pursuit of life is; The Pursuit”. That purpose is found in searching, exploring, discovering, and understanding. So as board riders, observers, explores and individuals, lets try work this out and find some understanding to this all.
In order to really understand life I would say we have to categorize it. So how do we do this, do we turn to science, God or our own experiences? I’m not sure; so let’s look at all of them briefly in turn. Before I start though, you might ask; why go over this, why ask this crazy mad question that hasn’t ever been really truly factually answered? Well because I can; and secondly because as surfers, skaters and people with a passion for life I think we should try understand life more in order to enjoy it, evoke it, flow it, skate it, surf it, love it.
What does science say? Well after being drilled into our heads like a billion zillion times we know the formulated theory of evolution that go’s something like this: “Millions of Billions of years ago there was a big bang, this created everything by random chance. Then after millions of millions of years the earth was formed, and the elements to create life; hydrogen, oxygen, carbon and nitrogen were present. There must have been a reaction, perhaps the energy came from lightning, or was formed on the backs of crystals. ‘Whatever it was’ this created life.” This is according to a Darwinian movie used to educate students at high school levels in the USA, exemplary show in Ben Stein latest movie “Expelled, No Intelligence Allowed”.
Well great! After that un’scientifical’ example I’m still clueless. Hope you doing better. I’m not even going to attempt to go over all the religious view points out there, but basically there is this theory called “Intelligent Design”. Intelligent design use’s science and something to do with mapping the human DNA Gee-Nome and the ordered pattered digital code complexity of DNA on a microscopic level to indicate a designer. I mean, that’s pretty wack but this theory holds a lot of valid points and arguments. Intelligent design asks the questions “how did we get here, were are we going and is there a meaning and purpose in life?” It tries to answer these questions through a scientifically study of nature and science. Aiming to prove an intelligent designer or creator of life, but also it go’s as a counter argument to evolution, scientifically disproving and discrediting Darwinism.
So from an intellectual level, these are the main arguments and theory’s very basically put. We can see that on a grand scale no one really has a clue. So then the question lies in the basic individuals understanding of the purpose and meaning of life. I did some research and this is what some top surfers, fellow students and avant-garde musical people think.
Dasty Payne, 19 years old, pro surfer from Maui, who started surfing at 2years old, says his drive to life is “just getting good waves, just living, in the pursuit of happiness, to just be happy and just live it.”
Somila Mjekula, 19 years old, student at the Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University of Port Elizabeth, who is currently study a BA in Media, Film and Communication, had the following to say on what the purpose and meaning of life is to her. She says the purpose of life is “to stop existing and start living.” She also says that it is “up to the individual; purpose can’t be made into a unit, unless we all strive for the same goal. Which we do not, we all want peace and happiness but everyone has a role to play in bring that to the world, their piece of serenity. It can never be defined.”
Brad Ettinger, 23 years old pro free surfer, from California says “life is all perspective, it’s not what happens to you, it’s how you handle the things that happen to you. It’s all about hard work and dedication.”
My good friend and band member Sean Plewman: musician, artist, writer and avid water man at times. Residing and working in Sedgefield has the following to say; “The purpose of life to me, religious motivations aside, is to leave a lasting legacy or impact on people.”
There are countless more arguments to what the purpose of life is and how we should live. Some people don’t even care and just live life as it progresses. Ricky Basnett, 22 years old, pro South African surfer, from the bluff in Durban says “his plan, I don’t know, I guess just, pffft, carry on surfing and see were it leads me. I don’t really have much of a plan.” He rates as long as he can carry on surfing, drink a beer and get paid to surf he’s stoked. He’s not interested in more then that; and that’s also fine I guess, because life doesn’t have to be clear cut and order always.
Our purpose can sometimes come from just living I guess. That’s all it is really, a guess. So now back to that question you might ask; “why have I read this all, what have I learnt, what deep knowledge have I the reader gained from all this?” Well actually I’m not sure, but next time some-one says to you that you spend to much time, surfing, skating or baking, exploring, drawing, painting, gaming, whatever; or they say to you “there’s more to life” you can say to them with full knowledge that there might be, but there might not be. Yah; I think that that was the point of my article. I will leave you with this epic quote underneath from Kelly Slater. Hope to see you in the water and in the park living a life filled with purpose and meaning, or not; whatever. Namaste.
Success is not found in achievement or lost in failure
Its is discovered through experiencing the process
You become what you repeatedly do
Because excellence is not an act of perfect but a practice
In twenty years from now you will be more disappointed by the waves you didn’t catch then by the ones you did.
So Dream Big, Take Risks, Think Differently
Because the pursuit of life is;

The Begining Of my Life
To call this the begining would be a mistake. Rather; it is me, pure, uncut, real and "now".
